Death Certificate Process
Guide for relatives
When does this guide apply?
If a Belima user has died and their dead-man's-switch (DMS) has not functioned — because a trusted contact could not activate it, or it failed technically — relatives can request manual release of the scheduled videos using a valid death certificate (issued by probate court authority). This guide explains the process step-by-step.
What do you need?
To request manual release, you must provide:
- Valid death certificate or probate court document issued by the competent authority in the deceased's jurisdiction, naming you as an authorized person (executor, heir with power of attorney, or estate administrator).
- Deceased's email address registered with Belima.
- Your full name, phone number, and email address so Belima can contact you.
The process
Step 1: Send your request
Email belimaapp@gmail.com with:
- Subject line: "Death Certificate" or "Dødsattest"
- Content: Your full name, your relationship to the deceased (heir, executor, estate administrator), the deceased's name and email address in Belima, and a brief explanation of why the DMS did not work.
- Attachment: Scanned PDF of the death certificate, probate court order, or estate document.
Step 2: Belima's verification
Northgaard ApS will:
- Verify the documentation against Belima's records.
- Send a protest notification to the deceased's registered email and all trusted contacts with a 7-day response deadline.
- If anyone objects within 7 days, the process stops and must be resolved through the appropriate court authority.
Step 3: Release or denial
If no one objects and the documentation is approved, videos are released to the recipients the deceased specified. Belima deletes the encrypted copy from its servers within 30 days of release.
If disputes arise among heirs or documentation questions occur, Belima may refer the case to the appropriate court authority.
Important notes
- Belima does not settle inheritance disputes. If heirs disagree about video distribution, we cannot decide — it must be resolved through proper court authority first.
- 7-day protest window. If the deceased's trusted contacts or registered family protest, release is suspended.
- Document retention. Death certificate documentation is kept by Belima for up to 2 years for legal purposes, then anonymously deleted.
- No control after release. Once videos are downloaded by recipients, Belima cannot enforce deletion — recipients decide what to do with them afterward.
